The first time I ever heard someone use the term superfood I will admit that I laughed. I was having lunch with a friend who always is jumps on to basic trends and has a vocabulary that is even more basic. Well it turns out superfoods are anything but, they offer benefits above and beyond their basic nutrient content. Almonds for example are high in protein and are the most nutritionally dense nut in existence. But wait there’s more! (Sorry we had to!)

Some may say these findings are too good to be true, well we decided to get in touch with our resident almond historian who found out that almonds can be traced back as far as 2,000 B.C. with even mentions of Van Gogh painting some of his best work inspired by them! But what makes these delicious nuts so special?

Well for starters, they help reduce various heart health risk factors. To back this up the American Heart Association certified almonds to display their heart-check mark after a study released in 2012 found positive results for those who included almonds as part of their everyday diet.

"Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as almonds, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease," the FDA said.

Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and supplying us with healthy fats are just two of the very many reasons to stock up! Other important benefits of chowing down on some almonds are their high content of nutrients that help our body perform at its prime such as magnesium, potassium, vitamin E, anti-oxidants, and copper! Copper is huge in energy production and I don't know anyone who wouldn't want an extra jolt especially halfway through cycling class, a very boring meeting, or simply running after a toddler! Plus almonds are wayyyyy healthier than any of those highlight colored energy drinks out on the market today.

If these benefits still do not have you convinced about throwing some almonds in your bag then did I mention almonds also help reduce belly fat and protect collagen fibers that aid in our skin being firm and youthful? No wonder nomadic tribes are said to have eaten them in their diet, which helped them through some brutally long journeys worse than Los Angeles traffic.
